A great book for commercial cake decorators and novelty cake makers alike.
You probably know Natalie Porter as the inventor of the Rapid Rose cutter, and the rest of her innovative range of sugar flower cutters and tools. This, as well as her position as the owner of cake business Immaculate Confections and regular teacher and magazine contributor, has made her uniquely qualified to create this particular title.
In her first book, Natalie comes at sugar flowers and their creation from a business and design perspective, focussing on making them quick and achievable and, therefore, commercially viable. She prioritises design over realism, championing the use of fantasy flowers and unconventional colours in order to create balanced, harmonious arrangements. The section on colour theory is particularly helpful, with explanations and examples so you can see the concepts at work.
Natalie mentions that she loves live demonstrations and teaching, and this shows in her writing. The tone is instructional yet conversational and the pages are peppered with tips and comments to give valuable extra insight. We particularly enjoyed The Legume Scale which clarifies exactly how large the balls of paste she uses are, from a petit pois up to a large chickpea, and it’s fun touches like this that really set this apart from other books on the subject.
